What is Diaphragmatic Breathing?

Obviously oxygen is very important to our health, but many people do not use their lungs to full capacity.  When asked to take a deep breath, many people automatically take a shallow breath where the chest and shoulders rise.  They took a breath, but not a FULL breath.

Also called “belly breathing”, diaphragmatic breathing includes learning to breathe from the lower abdominals by contracting the diaphragm and allowing the lungs to fill more fully.  This allows the ribcage to expand and supports the spine. The muscle contraction, increased oxygen intake and exhalation promote wellness and body harmony.  This therapy entails a comfortable place on the floor in a relaxing environment.

These are some of the benefits of a

Diaphragmatic Breathing:

  • Release of carbon dioxide in exchange for more oxygen to cells
  • Muscle contractions and increased oxygen stimulate the lymphatic system which supports the immune system
  • Creates calmness in the realm of panic and stress
  • Creates a meditative state and inner connection
  • Has the ability to  release repressed emotions
  • Strengthens abdominals resulting in better posture.
  • Supports the alignment of the spine and relaxes the neck
  • Assists in improving blood pH.

Testimonials:

*I recently participated in “Hustle the Hancock”. This is a race up the steps of 94 floors of the John Hancock building in Chicago.  The event is sponsored by the American Lung Association…

Debora taught me, through Diaphragmatic Breathing, how to breathe properly and efficiently.  I completed the race, using the breathing techniques, with little stress and discomfort in my lungs, and with none of the coughing that most others experienced.  Diaphragmatic  breathing,  has become almost second  nature to me now, and I'm finding that  my gym workouts are much more  productive and efficient.  MW- age 65

* Learning the technique of Diaphragmatic Breathing has made me aware of the significance of breath in the quest toward achieving/regaining optimal health and well being. This quest began 10 years ago after a traumatic injury. As a result of partnering my physical therapy treatments with daily, focused Diaphragmatic Breathing practice, I am effectively responding to and managing the stressors that have formerly compromised my health.  I am inspired by the experience that something as simple and natural as breath is providing the missing link for me.  MC-age 39
